Parts of a Tower Crane
Several of the most remarkable structures throughout the world are made with cranes. The newer cranes are utilized in order to reach higher heights. Tower cranes provide the means to transport and lift tools, building parts and supplies all over a construction site. There are several different components that assemble a tower crane when they are put together. Putting a tower crane together utilizes different pieces of construction equipment.
Base
Typically, the tower crane base is made from a steel unit. The base is attached to a concrete pad that is custom-designed. This kind of set-up provides the structure with stability. Overall, the construction should be well engineered and built in order to operate at optimum safety.
Mast
The mast on the tower crane provides the machinery with its overall height. The mast is constructed out of individual steel parts which are attached together. The amount of parts determines the height of the crane. Usually, a tower crane has a design that enables the mast to grow during construction by adding more sections as the building process continues. This way the height of the crane could be specified, making sure that it has adequate height to perform the needed work efficiently and safely.
Slewing Unit/Top Climber
A slewing unit is located above the mast. This unit houses the machines and the motor which allows the crane to rotate. A top climber is the piece of equipment that enables the mast to grow. The top climber is located just beneath the slewing unit. Hydraulic rams in the top climber allow the slewing unit to be detached from the mast by raising it higher.
Boom
The term "boom", refers to the working arm of a tower crane. The boom is made up of individual steel sections that are connected together, extending out from the top of the slewing unit and parallel to the ground. There is a trolley connected to the underside that could extend the length of the boom. This particular trolley holds the hoisting device.
